Voice dictation

Speak instead of type.

Dictation lets you talk to chat instead of typing, which is handy on a phone, in the car park before an interview, or any time typing is slow.

Start dictating

1. Select the microphone button next to the message box. 2. Allow microphone access the first time your browser asks. 3. Speak normally. Each take stops automatically after about 3 minutes and the transcript is added to the message box. Tap the microphone again if you want to keep going. 4. Or tap the check to stop early, review the text, then send.

Nothing is sent until you press send, so you always get a chance to fix a word first.

Get cleaner results

- Speak at a normal pace in complete sentences rather than short bursts. - Say punctuation out loud when you need it, for example "period" or "new line." - Reduce background noise where you can. Wind and music are the usual culprits. - Spell out unusual company names, then fix the spelling in the box before sending.

For longer stories, use a few 3-minute takes back to back. Talking through your last job is often faster than typing it, and chat can shape it into resume bullet points afterwards.

If the microphone will not start

- Check that your browser has permission to use the microphone. On most browsers this is in the padlock or settings icon in the address bar. - On a phone, close other apps that may be holding the microphone, such as a call or voice recorder. - Try a different browser if the button stays greyed out.

Dictation is a convenience, not a requirement. Typing works exactly the same way.
