Safety tips for job seekers

Spot job scams before they cost you money or data.

Real employers do not ask for money. Almost every job scam breaks that one rule somewhere in the process.

Clear warning signs

- You are asked to pay for training, equipment, or a background check - You are offered the job without a real interview - The pay is far above the going rate for that work - All contact happens over a messaging app and never by video or phone - The email address is a free personal account rather than a company domain - You are asked to receive money and forward it on - You are pressured to decide immediately

Never share these early

Wait until you have a written, signed offer from a company you have verified:

- Bank account or card details - Social security or national identity numbers - Photos of your passport or driving licence - Copies of documents "for payroll setup"

Legitimate onboarding paperwork comes after an offer, through a proper system.

How to verify a company

1. Search for the company independently rather than using links in the message. 2. Check whether the same job is posted on the company's own careers page. 3. Look up the recruiter on a professional network and see whether the profile is established. 4. Call the company's published main number and ask whether the role is real.

If you think you have been scammed
