Spend limits

Cap your monthly spend and get an email before you hit it.

A spend limit is a ceiling you set for the month. It protects you from a runaway script or an unexpectedly busy week.

Set a monthly limit

1. Open Billing > Limits. 2. Find Monthly limit. 3. Enter the maximum you want to spend in a month for this organization. 4. Select Save.

Once the hard cap is reached, metered chat and paid API requests stop until you raise the limit or the UTC calendar month changes. In chat you may see a billing block card with Open Billing.

Add budget alerts

Under Budget alerts, choose Add alert and set the amount you want to be warned at. You can also:

- Set Email when budget exceeds to a threshold such as 80 - Add Additional emails to alert so a finance teammate is copied

Alerts are a warning, not a stop. The monthly limit is what actually stops spending.

Picking a number

- Look at last month on the Usage dashboard and add some headroom. - If you are just starting, set a small limit deliberately. It is easy to raise later. - Set alerts below the limit so you have time to react.

If you hit the limit

Metered usage stays blocked until you raise the limit or the UTC calendar month changes. See Payment required messages.
